The Chicago Stars have scored 13 goals in 23 league matches this season.

The next-worst attack in the NWSL belongs to Bay FC, with 22. The gap between 16th and 15th on that measure is nearly as large as the gap between 15th and the league leaders.

Fourteen matches without a goal

Five matches account for eleven of them: 2-1 over Kansas City in March, 2-0 over Boston in April, 3-2 over Utah in July, 3-2 over Racing Louisville in August, and 1-0 over Bay FC in May.

All five were wins. Chicago have won every match in which they scored more than once, which is both encouraging and a restatement of the problem: this team is competitive whenever the attack functions, and the attack functions roughly once a month.

The one draw

Chicago’s record is 5-1-17. One draw in 23 matches is unusual on its own — most bottom-table sides collect several — and it follows directly from the scoring.

A team that fails to score in fourteen matches converts almost none of them into points, because a 0-0 requires the defense to hold for ninety minutes. Chicago managed that once, against Bay FC in August.
